The first commercial camera phone was released in Japan on May 1999. Its name was Kyocera Visual Phone VP-210.

At the time it was called the “Mobile Videophone” and had a 110,000-pixel front-facing camera.

While the first successful camera phone, J-SH04, was launched by J-Phone in Japan in 2000.

The J-SH04 was developed by Sharp.
